CYOA Writings
My writing classes took part in a long project that ended in them producing an original 15-20 page micro “Choose your own Adventure” style novel.
Many of my colleagues use graded readers for extensive reading. I believe that having the students read something written for native English audiences is more worthwhile. While this might go against some of the tenets of extensive reading, I stick with it.
For 4-6 weeks, the students read and map 3-6 published CYOA books. Since CYOA stopped being published from 1982-1989, I bought mine off Ebay. After reading the allotted amount, students break into groups of 5-6, brainstorm a topic, map out the path or direction of the story, delegate who writes which paths, peer edit, and finally ‘publish’ their work.
Attached are the final results of their valiant efforts. As with the original CYOA books, do not read them from front to back. The bottom of each page will tell you where in the book to go. BE SURE TO FOLLOW IT! If you are reading the book on your computer, click on the ‘pages’ tab on the left side of Adobe Reader. It will make following the story much easier. Enjoy!
